In accordance with the decision of the IX All-Russian Conference on medical geography with international participation (St. Petersburg, 1995) the X All-Russian Conference on medical geography with international participation "Medical Geography on the Eve of the XXI century" was held in October 1999 in St. Petersburg.
The agenda of the Conference was include the following themes:

• achievements with which medical geography approaches the XXI century;
• new paradigm of medical geography and medical ecology;
• social aspects of medical geography;
• introduction of modern information technology into medical geography and medical ecology;
• solution of medico-geography practical problems using a model of certain region;
• perspectives of medical geography development in the XXI century.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), with institutional cosponsors and partnerships with California State University at Fresno, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Bureau of the Census, US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the US Geological Survey (USGS), the American Public Health Association (APHA), the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), and the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA), a "GIS in Public Health" conference for August 17-20, 1998, in San Diego, California. This conference was highlight innovative applications of GIS (geographic information systems) and spatial analysis techniques for the protection of public health and the environment.
